Leaning on my support system

Toshia, living with GPP

My GPP showed up in my scalp, but it also “showed up” in my schedule, energy, relationships, and sense of self. There have been days when getting out of bed felt miserable. Days when work didn’t feel like an option. Moments when I had to involve my kids, even though I didn’t want to put my problems on them. It took me a while to realize I wasn’t alone and didn’t have to carry this on my own.

GPP has taught me many things in life, and one of the most important is that having a support system can carry you through the ups and downs.

Talking about GPP with my mom and my kids — telling them how rough it’s been and having their support — has really helped me mentally. Even though they don’t understand, just letting people know what I’m going through brings me strength.

In addition to my family, my doctor has also become someone I rely on for support. I make it a point to be honest about the emotional and physical impact of GPP. By doing so, we’re able to work together and figure out a positive path forward.

So, to anyone who feels overwhelmed, it’s okay to lean on others. You don’t have to do this alone. Let the people around you love you, and let them show up. You deserve that support and much more!
